IKEA Doncaster Case Study

Specialist Roof CCTV Installation Case Study

Customer

Ikea

Location

Doncaster, South Yorkshire

Time Frame

December 2025 (3 weeks)

Project Type

Roof CCTV Installation

The cable route was split between:

  • External rooftop containment systems
  • Internal high-level routes via existing tray work
  • During installation, a section of fibre cable on the roof was unfortunately damaged. Our engineers acted quickly to identify the issue and re-run the affected cable, ensuring the system remained fully operational without compromising performance.
Fibre Splicing & System Reliability

To maintain strong connectivity across the long cable run, we installed four fibre splice units, ensuring efficient termination and minimal signal loss.

This provided:

  • Reliable high-speed data transmission
    Long-term system stability
  • Optimal CCTV performance across all cameras
  • Structural Mounting & Weatherproofing
  • Each PTZ camera pole was securely mounted to the steel girders on the rooftop, providing a robust and durable fixing suitable for exposed conditions.

Following installation, we also sealed all parapet wall penetrations, maintaining the building’s weatherproof integrity and preventing water ingress.

Delivering Under Challenging Conditions

This project presented a number of logistical and technical challenges, including:

  • Working at height (35 metres) with cat ladder roof access
  • Installing 400 metres of rooftop tray work
  • Running and protecting 500 metres of fibre optic cable
  • Resolving on-site fibre damage efficiently
  • Integrating external and internal cable routes
  • Despite these complexities, our team delivered a fully operational, high-performance CCTV system tailored to the client’s exact requirements.
  • Coordinating crane and MEWP operations

Serpro Integrated Services successfully delivered a high-level CCTV installation at IKEA Doncaster, providing enhanced security and monitoring for the building’s rooftop solar panel system.

This technically demanding project required detailed planning, specialist access solutions, and advanced cabling infrastructure to ensure a reliable, long-term system in a challenging environment.

Protecting Critical Roof Assets

The primary objective of this installation was to provide full visual coverage of the store’s rooftop solar panels. These areas are exposed to harsh weather conditions, making monitoring essential for identifying issues such as panel displacement (“blow-offs”), damage, or unauthorised access.

To achieve this, we installed four high-performance PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras from Hikvision, mounted on 2-metre poles positioned at each corner of the roof. This setup ensures complete and flexible coverage across the entire rooftop.

Working at Height – 35 Metres with Specialist Access

With the roof standing at approximately 35 metres high, safe access and movement across the site were critical.

Our engineers accessed the roof via a fixed cat ladder, requiring strict adherence to working-at-height safety procedures. In addition:

  • A crane lift was used to transport materials and equipment safely to roof level
  • A boom lift (MEWP) was utilised internally to reach high ceilings and existing containment routes
  • This combination of access methods ensured the installation could be carried out efficiently and safely across all areas of the site.
Fibre Optic Installation & 400 Metres of Tray Work

A major element of this project involved installing approximately 500 metres of fibre optic cable to support the CCTV system.

To facilitate this, our team installed 400 metres of new tray work across the rooftop, creating a secure and organised containment system to protect the cabling from environmental exposure.
